On January 27, 2026 (local time), the European Commission unveiled the initiation of two targeted regulatory actions against Google. These actions are designed to ensure Google's strict adherence to its obligations under the Digital Markets Act.

The inaugural regulatory step compels Google to offer third-party developers complimentary access to both hardware and software interfaces governed by the Android system. This is especially pertinent to the fundamental functional modules utilized by Google's proprietary AI services, with the objective of dismantling entry barriers for AI in the smart mobile device market.

The second regulatory directive obliges Google to allow third-party online search engines to access anonymized data—such as search rankings, user queries, click behaviors, and browsing paths—under principles that are fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory. This move aims to empower third-party search engines to elevate their service quality.

The European Commission is set to finalize its review within six months of launching the procedures. Within the initial three months, it will inform Google of its preliminary investigation conclusions. Additionally, it will publicly release a non-confidential draft of the proposed compliance measures to gather input from market stakeholders.
