Sources with inside knowledge of the situation have revealed that Chinese regulatory bodies have recently informed several prominent domestic tech enterprises, including Alibaba, that they are free to start making arrangements for ordering NVIDIA's H200 artificial intelligence chips. This development is widely regarded as an indication that Beijing is on the verge of formally greenlighting the import of this highly significant AI chip. Regulatory agencies have issued “in-principle approval” notices to companies like Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance. This enables them to advance to the subsequent phase of procurement preparations and participate in discussions regarding specific aspects, such as the number of chips to be ordered. Meanwhile, the authorities are also motivating these companies to incorporate a certain, yet-to-be-defined proportion of domestically produced chips into their purchases alongside the approved imports.
