On January 22, Bloomberg reported that Arthur Mensch, the CEO of French AI startup Mistral AI, made a bold statement at the Davos World Economic Forum, dismissing the notion that China's AI technology lags behind that of the US as "utter nonsense."
Mensch emphasized that China's innovative strides in the AI sector, especially in terms of open-source technological capabilities, are already exerting significant pressure on US tech firms.
Previously, the CEO of DeepMind, an AI subsidiary of Google, had asserted that China was roughly six months behind the Western countries in developing cutting-edge AI models. Similarly, the CEO of Anthropic had suggested that US technological restrictions on China had hindered the country's AI progress.
However, Mensch's perspective sharply diverges from these views.
