While AI hasn't yet brought about a sweeping transformation of the entire labor market, the chiefs of two prominent AI firms, Google DeepMind and Anthropic, have independently reported noticing AI's growing influence on entry-level roles, with these positions gradually being taken over by AI systems. Demis Hassabis, who heads Google DeepMind, remarked that this year could mark the inaugural instance of witnessing AI's significant impact on entry-level jobs. He noted that the company has eased its hiring momentum, especially for entry-level and internship opportunities. Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, echoed this sentiment. He reaffirmed his earlier prediction that AI might render approximately half of the entry-level white-collar jobs obsolete, potentially driving the unemployment rate up to 20%. He highlighted that initial indicators are already visible in the software and programming sectors, where the need for entry-level and certain mid-tier positions might dwindle. Previously, both leaders have underscored the necessity of tackling, at an institutional scale, AI's ramifications on the economic and employment landscape. Amodei anticipates that within the next 1 to 5 years, the rate of change could outpace society's capacity to adjust.
