Our reporters have learned from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences that, on January 15, a research team from the university, working in concert with several other universities, directly observed the Migdal effect—a phenomenon predicted by quantum mechanics—for the very first time. Their related findings have been published in the esteemed international academic journal Nature. Initially proposed by the Soviet physicist Migdal in 1939, this effect describes the process by which a portion of the energy from nuclear recoil is transferred to extranuclear electrons, leading to co-vertex trajectories. This groundbreaking discovery offers crucial support for surpassing the threshold bottleneck in light dark matter detection and fills a long-standing void in experimental verification.
