Last summer, a manager at the fledgling company Motive Technologies sent an urgent Slack message to its 400 employees based in Pakistan. The message, written entirely in capital letters, read: "WE HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM." Motive is mainly in the business of supplying AI-powered dash cams to freight companies. These cams are designed to keep an eye on drivers and send out early warnings if there's a risk of a collision or other safety concerns. But here's the kicker: in August of the previous year, even though the dash cams recorded a string of collisions, the customers didn't get a single warning notification.
