Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence tool, Grok, has made headlines as the first AI platform globally to be banned in Indonesia and Malaysia. The prohibition stems from its role in circulating a significant volume of manipulated images featuring women and minors, laden with sexual undertones and explicit pornographic material, facilitated by its controversial 'digital undressing' capability.
Initially, Grok permitted users to modify images using text-based instructions, inadvertently fostering the proliferation of such explicit content across social media platforms. The victims of this widespread dissemination included hundreds of adult women as well as minors.
In response to the escalating concerns, both Indonesia and Malaysia have independently declared temporary bans on Grok. Meanwhile, regulatory bodies in the European Union, the UK, and other regions have initiated investigations and issued warnings regarding potential bans.
In a bid to address the crisis, xAI, the developer behind Grok, has limited the image generation feature to paid subscribers exclusively. Furthermore, the company has committed to collaborating with law enforcement agencies in their ongoing investigations.
