In January 2026, three Democratic senators from the United States—Ron Wyden, Ed Markey, and Ben Ray Luján—publicly dispatched a letter to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, and Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google. In the letter, they demanded the removal of Musk's X platform and its AI tool, Grok, from app stores. The demand was made on the condition that these platforms first prohibit users from generating and sharing explicit images and descriptions involving child sexual abuse without consent. The senators highlighted that X and Grok have been exploited to mass-produce such illegal content, breaching the app stores' terms of service. They warned that continued inaction would compromise Apple's and Google's pledges to content moderation and user safety. The senators requested written responses from both companies by January 23, detailing their strategies for tackling this issue. Prior to this, the X platform had already been under scrutiny by French prosecutors in Paris for analogous concerns, while nations such as the UK, India, and Malaysia had also commenced reviews.
