Recently, Athens, Greece, embarked on a pilot project utilizing AI-driven cameras for traffic monitoring. The preliminary data gleaned from this initiative reveals that an astonishing nearly 2,500 serious traffic infractions were documented over a mere four-day span. Notably, a single camera stationed on Syngrou Avenue was responsible for capturing over 1,000 of these violations within the same timeframe, constituting almost half of the total violations recorded during the pilot phase. Other areas designated for the pilot also witnessed a significant number of infractions, including instances of running red lights.
These advanced cameras are equipped to discern a wide array of traffic violations, automatically generating timestamped videos and photos to serve as irrefutable evidence. Offenders will be duly notified via electronic means and will be mandated to pay fines, the amount of which will be calibrated based on the gravity of the violation. The Greek government has outlined ambitious plans to extend this surveillance network across the entire nation, with the intention of installing an additional 2,000 fixed cameras and 500 mobile surveillance units.
