On December 23, 2025, reports emerged indicating that Alibaba is contemplating the purchase of 40,000 to 50,000 MI308 AI chips from AMD. The MI308 represents an AI chip tailored by AMD to meet the specific requirements of the Chinese market. Alongside NVIDIA's H20 chip, it secured export approval from the U.S. government in July 2025. For chips sold to China, AMD is obligated to pay a 15% tax. Besides Alibaba, other prominent Chinese cloud - service providers and internet firms are also in the process of evaluating this particular chip.
