The recently appointed CEO of Mozilla has unveiled plans to revamp Firefox into what is termed a 'modern AI browser.' This announcement has, however, triggered a considerable wave of backlash and raised numerous concerns among its user base. In response to this growing discontent, Firefox developer Jake Archibald has clarified that Firefox will incorporate a 'kill switch' mechanism. This feature will empower users to entirely deactivate all AI-driven functionalities within the browser. Furthermore, he emphasized that all AI features will be entirely optional, and activating this 'kill switch' will result in the complete removal of any AI-related content from the user's experience. It is pertinent to note that Firefox encountered user resistance in 2024 over its data collection practices, which were initially 'turned on by default and necessitated manual deactivation' by users.
