Amazon has recently unveiled a strategic reorganization of its artificial intelligence (AI) project teams, with Peter DeSantis, a seasoned executive from its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), stepping into the helm of a newly formed business unit. This consolidated unit brings together the General Artificial Intelligence (AGI) team, the chip research and development (R&D) department, and the quantum computing research team under one roof.
Despite Amazon Web Services' global dominance as the largest provider of computing power and data storage leasing services, the company has yet to fully capitalize on its potential in the AI developer arena. This is reflected in its stock price growth, which has trailed behind that of other tech giants in the so-called "Magnificent Seven" this year.
Amazon had previously taken steps to consolidate its AI development initiatives. Now, with the integration of Annapurna Labs, the company is further bolstering its AI capabilities. DeSantis, a veteran with nearly three decades of service at Amazon, boasts an impressive track record that positions him well for this new leadership role.
In a related move, Rohit Prasad, a key figure behind the creation of Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, is set to depart at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Peter Abel will assume leadership of the foundational AI model development team, steering Amazon's efforts in this crucial area.
