Amazon has witnessed a significant leadership transition, with Rohit Prasad, the Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist overseeing the development of cutting-edge AI models, slated to depart by the year's end. Prasad, who was instrumental in founding Amazon's Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division, spearheaded the creation of the Nova model series. Nevertheless, the Nova series has underperformed compared to industry-leading offerings such as OpenAI's GPT series and Google's Gemini, a shortfall widely regarded as the catalyst for Prasad's exit.
In a strategic move to reverse its fortunes, Amazon has unveiled the formation of a new division, to be helmed by Peter DeSantis, the Senior Vice President of Amazon Web Services (AWS). This newly established entity will assume responsibility for AGI research and development, silicon chip innovation, and quantum computing endeavors. Additionally, robotics luminary Peter Abbeel has been appointed to lead the frontier model research team. Through these personnel changes and organizational restructuring, Amazon is striving to reclaim its competitive edge in the realm of artificial general intelligence.
