On Wednesday, Amazon unveiled a major shake-up in its artificial intelligence (AI) project team. Peter DeSantis, a seasoned executive hailing from Amazon's cloud computing division, has been tapped to helm the newly formed business unit. This restructured entity brings together the general artificial intelligence (AGI) team, the chip manufacturing arm, and the quantum computing research division under one roof. Prior to this reorganization, Amazon had already taken steps to centralize its once-fragmented AI development endeavors. This latest adjustment not only fortifies the team but also integrates Annapurna Labs into the fold. Rohit Prasad, who currently leads the AGI team, is set to step down from his role at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Pete Abill will assume leadership of the foundational AI model development team. Amazon's strategic move is aimed at crafting cutting-edge, all-purpose artificial intelligence tools akin to ChatGPT, positioning itself at the forefront of the AI race.
