Microsoft has officially announced that within the Windows 11 operating system, artificial intelligence (AI) agents are now required to secure explicit user consent prior to accessing six frequently utilized folders, including the user's desktop and documents directory. Users have the flexibility to configure permissions on an individual basis for each AI agent. In the past, the system automatically granted agents access privileges without explicitly informing users of their ability to independently manage these settings. In a revised documentation, Microsoft has elucidated that starting from preview version 26100.7344 and subsequent releases, AI agents are, by default, restricted from accessing personal files. Should access be deemed necessary, the system will present a prompt window, affording users the choice to either grant or deny permission. Microsoft has implemented a dedicated settings interface for each AI agent, empowering users to manage both file access permissions and the ability to invoke system applications. The access permissions for the six commonly accessed folders are categorized into three distinct options: always permit, prompt for each access, and never permit. However, it should be noted that at present, these settings can only be uniformly applied across the six folders. Moreover, agents are limited to accessing folders that are accessible to all authenticated users. This innovative mechanism seamlessly integrates AI capabilities while safeguarding user privacy by entrusting users with the ultimate decision-making authority over file access.
