On December 12, 2025, Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft's Head of Consumer AI, announced that the company is advancing the development of superintelligence aligned with human interests and has committed to immediately halting the project if it poses a threat to humanity. Previously, progress in related work had been constrained by contractual terms with OpenAI. After Microsoft gained the rights to independently develop artificial intelligence in October of the previous year, relevant plans were able to move forward. Suleyman emphasized in a blog post that AI can only succeed by serving humanity.
