On Tuesday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that the Department of Defense (DoD) has chosen Google's Gemini for the inaugural large-scale rollout of a novel generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform. This move signifies what seems to be the Pentagon's inaugural large-scale embrace of a commercially crafted generative AI tool. Through the newly established GenAI.mil platform, the DoD will implement Gemini for Government, enabling staff members to utilize the tool on their work computers for non-classified duties. This comes with the guarantee that DoD data will remain untapped for training Google's public models. The DoD is wholeheartedly stepping into the generative AI era, with its Chief Technology Officer envisioning AI tools to expedite daily administrative tasks, among other applications, and with intentions to extend pertinent functionalities to 3 million users down the line. Prior to this, the Pentagon had already undertaken trials of generative AI, with Google inking a $200 million deal with the Pentagon in July. This year, several other AI firms have also entered into contracts with the Pentagon. This deployment marks a substantial triumph for Google, while simultaneously sparking inquiries into whether other contracted entities will similarly be deployed on the GenAI.mil platform.
