Tachyum, a company specializing in the design of general-purpose processors, has declared that it will take measures to safeguard its registered trademark rights for the acronym "TPU." The company is demanding that Google stop using this abbreviation within the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. Tachyum's "TPU" is an acronym for "Tachyum Processing Unit." The company initiated the trademark application process in 2015 and has been the rightful holder of the trademark since October 2020. On the other hand, Google's "TPU" stands for "Tensor Processing Unit." Google launched its first-generation TPU product back in 2015 and submitted a trademark application for "Google TPU" in November of this year. Tachyum contends that as both companies' products are aimed at the AI market, Google's unauthorized use of the "TPU" acronym amounts to trademark infringement and has adversely affected Tachyum's business prospects.
