On Wednesday, the Future of Life Institute unveiled an updated edition of its Artificial Intelligence Safety Index. This index clearly indicates that the safety protocols of leading AI firms, including Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, and Meta, are significantly lagging behind the emerging global benchmarks. Max Tegmark, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the head of the Future of Life Institute, emphasized that, despite the recent surge in concerns over AI-powered hacking attempts and incidents where AI has led to mental confusion and self-harm, AI companies in the U.S. are still subject to less stringent regulations than those governing restaurants. Moreover, these companies persist in lobbying against the implementation of mandatory safety standards, a move that raises eyebrows and concerns among industry watchers.
