As reported by the Financial Times, China has, for the first time, outpaced the United States in the worldwide 'open' AI model market, acquiring a significant edge in terms of application. Data from research conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Hugging Face reveals that over the past year, the share of newly developed open models originating from China, in the total downloads of open models, has climbed to 17%. This figure surpasses the 15.8% contributed by U.S. tech behemoths such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI. This achievement marks the inaugural instance where Chinese companies have surpassed their American rivals in this particular domain.
China's robust endorsement of open models stands in stark contrast to the 'closed' strategy embraced by the majority of U.S. tech giants. The download volume of Chinese open models has witnessed a swift surge, with models like DeepSeek and Alibaba's QianWen LLM (Large Language Model) dominating the download landscape in China. China's open-source model ecosystem has entered a phase characterized by intense competition and rapid advancement. In contrast, U.S. open-source models are grappling with challenges, including a diminishing proportion of derivative models.
