Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, stated in an interview with CNBC that consciousness is an attribute uniquely possessed by biological organisms. He clarified that AI, despite its advanced capabilities, remains a sophisticated tool devoid of genuine consciousness. Suleyman highlighted that while AI can mimic traits such as memory and emotions, these are merely "simulations of reality." He cautioned users against conflating virtual experiences with actual ones. Suleyman also issued a warning: if society were to excessively attribute consciousness to AI, it could give rise to issues like psychological dependency and disputes over rights. He urged the industry to refrain from using language that might create illusions of machine consciousness and to implement safeguards to prevent potential social problems.
