Nick Ray, an ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) sufferer, has achieved the remarkable feat of controlling a robotic arm with his mind alone, thanks to a brain implant. This enables him to carry out routine tasks like grasping a cup for a drink and opening the refrigerator door. The implanted chip in his brain is capable of deciphering neural signals instantaneously and transforming them into Bluetooth commands to manipulate external devices. During dexterity assessments, Ray also broke new ground by maneuvering a wheelchair for the very first time and successfully completing a challenging trick shot. This groundbreaking demonstration forms a part of the 'CONVOY' research initiative, with Ray being the eighth individual to undergo an experimental brain implant. Neuralink embarked on its inaugural human trial in 2024, following the resolution of safety apprehensions raised by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). The initial recipient of the implant showcased the capacity to control a computer cursor and engage in gaming activities, whereas Ray has broadened the scope of application into the tangible, real-world domain.
