On October 10, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced that, under the UK’s newly established digital market competition framework, it has officially recognized Google’s ‘strategic market position’ within the search services industry. The CMA clarified that this designation does not imply any wrongdoing on Google’s part, nor does it entail immediate regulatory obligations. Nonetheless, the authority will explore suitable and precisely tailored measures to foster robust competition in the general search services market and protect the rights and interests of both consumers and businesses. The CMA expects to initiate consultations on potential regulatory interventions later this year. In response, Google acknowledged that its search operations might be subject to new regulations and urged the UK government to create a regulatory environment that encourages innovation.
