At the Sifted Summit, Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, sounded the alarm that artificial intelligence (AI) could present risks even more catastrophic than nuclear weapons. His concern stems from AI's susceptibility to hacking, which he warned could result in enormous casualties. Schmidt highlighted that AI systems have the potential to uncover cyber zero-day vulnerabilities or even discover entirely new species. If these capabilities are exploited with malicious intent, he cautioned, the repercussions would be beyond imagination. Schmidt urged governments and businesses to collaborate in preventing the misuse of AI technology and to develop global safety standards and codes of conduct to mitigate these risks.
