On the 8th (local time), John Schmidtlein, an attorney representing Alphabet, Google's parent company, informed U.S. Federal Judge Amit Mehta—who is presiding over Google's antitrust case—that Google aims to preserve its right to bundle its Gemini AI service with applications like Google Maps or YouTube. Earlier, Judge Amit Mehta had determined that Google held a monopoly in the search and search advertising sectors. The U.S. Department of Justice sought to expand this ruling to encompass Gemini AI as well. John Schmidtlein argued that Google has not attained a monopoly in the AI market. He also pointed out that since Microsoft has already integrated AI applications into its office suite, Google should not be barred from doing the same. Nevertheless, Judge Amit Mehta voiced concerns, highlighting that Google's bundling strategies could potentially enable it to gain a more advantageous market position within the AI services sector.
