On October 6 (local time), OpenAI and AMD unveiled the signing of a substantial cooperation pact. As per the agreement, OpenAI is set to deploy up to 6 gigawatts (GW) of AMD Instinct GPUs in the coming years. The initial batch of 1GW devices is scheduled to go live in the latter half of 2026, in a deal worth billions of dollars. In tandem, AMD will grant OpenAI up to 160 million warrants, which, if fully utilized, could endow OpenAI with roughly a 10% stake in AMD. This partnership cements AMD as a pivotal strategic ally of OpenAI, aiding in easing supply chain strains within the industry. AMD projects that the deal will yield tens of billions of dollars in net revenue each year, with new revenue surpassing $100 billion over the next four years. Following the announcement, AMD's pre-market stock price spiked by over 37% at one juncture and closed up 23.71%, whereas Nvidia's stock price dipped nearly 2%. Earlier, on September 22, OpenAI had already forged a strategic partnership with Nvidia, which also intended to invest $100 billion. This alliance with AMD not only underscores OpenAI's loftier aspirations but also diminishes its dependence on Nvidia's chips.
