The U.S. government, along with investors, has funneled around US$9 billion into the realm of small nuclear reactors. Their goal is to fuel the AI sector and curb carbon emissions. Yet, experts caution that this technology might face significant hurdles in reaching commercial feasibility, primarily because of exorbitant costs. According to Financial Times data, since 2019, U.S. government bodies like the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense have pledged over US$6 billion in support to small modular reactor developers. This support comes in the form of grants, loans, and cost-sharing arrangements. In the same timeframe, private investment has also seen a dramatic upswing, with total funding surpassing US$3 billion.
