Andrew Bosworth, the Chief Technology Officer of Meta Platforms, took to his Instagram account to shed light on the technical glitches that led to the failure of the new smart glasses demo at the Meta Connect Developer Conference. During the demonstration, the AI assistant gave off-the-mark responses, and the video call feature malfunctioned. Zuckerberg, twice during the event, pointed the finger at WiFi issues as the culprit. Bosworth, however, highlighted that this incident underscored three fundamental conflicts inherent in consumer-grade AR devices:

  • The disconnect between the interaction logic of the devices and user expectations. This means that the way users anticipate interacting with the technology doesn't align with how it's actually designed to function.
  • The AI's inability to grasp step-by-step guidance requirements, a flaw that points to deficiencies in natural language processing for scenario-based tasks. In simpler terms, the AI struggled to follow and execute instructions given in a sequential manner, which is crucial for many real-world applications.
  • The trade-off between achieving a lightweight hardware design and maintaining functionality. The smart glasses, weighing 69 grams, are significantly heavier than ordinary glasses. This highlights the ongoing challenge of miniaturizing display modules and batteries, which remains a bottleneck in the development of such devices.
  • The ecosystem's lack of maturity, with Meta still trailing behind Apple's iOS ecosystem in terms of integration capabilities for cross-device collaboration. This means that Meta's devices and services aren't as seamlessly interconnected as Apple's, limiting their overall utility and appeal.
