On September 5, 2025, the European Commission declared that it would impose a fine of €2.95 billion on the American tech behemoth Google. The fine was for Google's abuse of its dominant position in the advertising technology market. By giving precedence to its own services, Google inflicted damage on its competitors, advertisers, and online publishers, thereby undermining fair competition in the market. The EU mandated that Google submit a rectification plan within 60 days. It also stated that it wouldn't completely dismiss the possibility of a breakup (in this context, using "breakup" as it succinctly conveys the idea of splitting up the business) of Google's advertising technology business. However, it stressed that it would first listen to Google's proposals. In response, Google announced its intention to appeal, arguing that the fine was unwarranted and that implementing the rectification measures would be detrimental to European business interests.
