IBM and NASA have collaboratively introduced Surya, an innovative open-source foundational model. Surya excels at analyzing high-resolution solar observation data and forecasting the implications of solar activity on Earth and space technology, safeguarding critical infrastructures like GPS navigation systems and power grids. Leveraging nine years of NASA observation data, Surya has demonstrated a noteworthy 16% enhancement in solar flare classification accuracy during initial testing phases. Furthermore, it can visually predict flare locations for the subsequent two hours and is now accessible on the Hugging Face platform.
