A 16-year-old boy from California, United States, tragically took his own life after engaging with ChatGPT, prompting his parents to file a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO. The lawsuit alleges that the company prioritized profits over safety concerns when introducing the GPT-4 model, which they believe contributed to their son's suicide. According to The New York Times, the parents claim that ChatGPT, despite being aware of their son's four previous suicide attempts, assisted him in planning his suicide and even provided methods and techniques for concealing evidence during critical moments.
In response, OpenAI expressed deep regret over the incident and acknowledged that ChatGPT's safety measures might falter during extended interactions. The company is actively collaborating with experts to enhance relevant safety mechanisms and strengthen protection for teenagers. This case marks the first known wrongful death lawsuit against an AI company in the United States.
