During the second-quarter earnings call, Martin Lau, President of Tencent Holdings, disclosed that the company has amassed a substantial inventory of AI GPU chips to cater to future model training requirements, thus ruling out the short-term acquisition of NVIDIA H20 or other Western AI chips. This decision is grounded on four pivotal factors: Firstly, Tencent possesses ample GPU stock to facilitate model upgrades; secondly, for inference tasks, the company can opt for non-Western chips; thirdly, software optimization enhances computing power utilization; and fourthly, NVIDIA chips have yet to secure Chinese government security clearance. Furthermore, Tencent's capital expenditure for the second quarter amounted to RMB 19.11 billion, marking a 119% year-on-year surge, primarily allocated towards infrastructure, data center, and AI-related developments. Despite this surge in AI investment, Tencent has demonstrated remarkable resilience and financial robustness, with revenue and net profit growing by 15% and 11%, respectively, in the second quarter.
