Years after the concept from Google called Project Starline debuted, the company has now introduced Google Beam, which features the same product with subtle improvements that still focus on transforming the video chatting experience.

While not much has transformed with the technology, Google's work is now paying off as the company's latest demo in I/O 2025 pushes the boundaries of virtual video conversations.

The main goal of Google's Beam is to deliver a more immersive video calling experience by offering a 3D image of both persons.

Project Starline Is Now Google Beam: Immersive Video Calls

The future of communication is here, says Google, and this is because the company has now made its Project Starline official with its new name, Google Beam.

The company recently gave I/O 2025 attendees a chance to experience the technology. The experience now transforms into a full-fledged Google product that would soon be available for commercial use, with Google partnering with companies to distribute the technology.

Google Beam is built using the Mountain View-based tech giant's Google Cloud, with artificial intelligence also helping the technology deliver the experience with its generative capabilities.

The company revealed that it developed an AI volumetric video model that helps transform images into full three-dimensional form, allowing users to see it from any perspective in front of the screen.

More Realistic Video Calls in 3D with Google Beam

Google Beam gives users on both ends of the call the ability to see the video in 3D, with parties required to use the technology built by the company. Using AI, the cloud, and its light field display, Google Beam can create dimensionality and depth in video calls to deliver a more realistic approach, as if the person you are talking to is right in front of you.

This takes the traditional 2D video calling experience to new heights, and according to CNET, it offers a more natural, face-to-face feel to the conversation.

Project Starline: Google's Work on Immersive Video

Project Starline was previously a concept that Google introduced towards the end of the pandemic, and this was during the time when people were not able to go to public places. Google promised to bring a "window" to users who will be using the device, making it seem like they are having a face-to-face conversation and are only separated by glass.

This technology was dubbed as a "hyper realistic" 3D imaging device that captures not only the front angle of a person but also the sides, which takes it a step further than two-dimensional video conferencing options like Zoom or Meet. Back in 2022, Google started testing Project Starline in booths for people to try for themselves, with the technology also making use of infrared projectors and capturing spatial audio.

Despite being one of the best possible tools for the pandemic, Google continued to work on the technology for real-life applications, one that would help different settings to allow people to be closer than before.
