On May 8, Business Insider revealed that in 2023, the OpenAI board temporarily ousted CEO Sam Altman and appointed Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch, as the interim CEO. Nevertheless, a mere 72 hours later, Altman was reinstated to his position as CEO of OpenAI. The chaos arose from the board's conviction that Altman's communication lacked sufficient candor, thereby impeding his capacity to carry out his responsibilities effectively. During his brief stint, Shear unveiled a 'three-pronged strategy' that encompassed engaging an independent investigator, maintaining open lines of communication with stakeholders, and overhauling the management team. With Altman's comeback, Shear's reign as interim CEO came to an abrupt halt. Now, Elon Musk's legal action against Altman has once again propelled Shear into the public eye. The lawsuit unveiled text message exchanges between Mira Murati, then-Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, and Altman. Upon hearing of Shear's appointment as interim CEO, Murati dismissed him as a 'nobody from Twitch.' This conversation quickly went viral on social media, prompting Shear to respond with self-deprecating wit. He temporarily altered his social media profile background to a screenshot of the text message, only to later replace it with an image related to liquid crystal phases, quipping, 'It's a great honor that you can use this as a meme.' Musk also chimed in with an emoji, hinting at a well-played rebuttal. Shear is a prominent name in Silicon Valley. The startup he established, Kiko, secured funding from Y Combinator in 2005 and was subsequently acquired by eBay. He also co-founded Justin.tv, which eventually evolved into the game streaming behemoth Twitch and was sold to Amazon for a staggering $970 million. Shear's most recent endeavor, Softmax, is a startup dedicated to the realm of 'AI alignment'.
